Acknowledging the multifaceted nature of student development, Dr. Sari Karmina and Prof. Ben Dyson embarked on a transformative research journey from May 1, 2023, to November 30, 2023. Their collaborative project, “Improving Students’ Social and Emotional Wellbeing through Cooperative Learning in International Classroom Programs,” offers insights into enhancing the holistic development of students in today’s diverse and dynamic educational landscape.
Dr. Sari Karmina, a prominent figure in the field of international education, and Prof. Ben Dyson, an esteemed educator from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, joined forces to explore the intersection of cooperative learning and student wellbeing. Their research seeks to unravel the impact of cooperative learning approaches on the social and emotional development of students participating in international classroom programs.
The significance of this research collaboration lies in its holistic approach. Beyond academic achievement, Dr. Karmina and Prof. Dyson delve into the dimensions of social and emotional wellbeing. They recognize that students in international classroom programs face unique challenges and opportunities, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of their development.
The research project employs a mixed-methods design, incorporating surveys, interviews, and classroom observations. This multidimensional approach aims to capture both quantitative and qualitative data, providing a nuanced perspective on the experiences of students engaged in cooperative learning within international educational settings.
Cooperative learning, a pedagogical approach that emphasizes collaborative problem-solving and mutual support, serves as the focal point of their investigation. The researchers explore how this approach enhances students’ sense of belonging, interpersonal skills, and emotional resilience. They also consider the role of culturally diverse classroom dynamics in shaping these outcomes.
As the project progresses, Dr. Karmina and Prof. Dyson’s collaboration promises to offer valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and institutions committed to nurturing the holistic development of students. Their research contributes to the ongoing dialogue surrounding the importance of social and emotional wellbeing in education, especially in international and multicultural contexts.
This collaborative research endeavor exemplifies the power of academic cooperation in addressing pressing educational challenges. Dr. Sari Karmina and Prof. Ben Dyson’s joint effort reflects a commitment to enriching the educational experiences of students worldwide. Their findings will undoubtedly provide a roadmap for fostering the social and emotional wellbeing of students in international classroom programs, shaping the future of education in an increasingly interconnected world.
